It's a black week for the built environment in Street

Two of the houses that gave individuality to Street are even now being demolished. McCarthy and Stone took the roof tiles off Holmcroft a few days ago, and this evening as I passed I could see over their protective screen that the upper storey is quickly vanishing.

Even more distinctive, the Tower House in Overleigh is being knocked down, just as proposals for the building to be listed were with English Heritage.

These are failures on the part of the Street Society, I suppose, but the Society was not idle in the case of either house, and made representations at the proper time.

The anonymous commenter to my previous post who advocated a sit-in at Tower House may have had a point, but the mainly elderly membership of the Society have not shown great enthusiasm so far for direct action.
